Ethnic Albanians sentenced for terrorism in Macedonia

SKOPJE,(AFP) - A court in the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia has sentenced an ethnic Albanian to 12 and a half years jail for planting explosives in a courthouse, national radio reported Monday.

Argim Rocoski, 25, and Atmir Rocoski,24,were found guilty of terrorism and illegal possession of arms.

Atmir Rocoski received three years for his part in planting explosives in the courthouse in the southwestern town Struga in February.

The two men, who are not related, were arrested in March.

Macedonia was the scene of violent confrontations between government forces and an ethnic Albanian minority in 2001.

International peacekeepers were deployed after a peace deal ended seven months of fighting between government forces and Albanian rebels.

However, the inter-ethnic tensions have lingered on, especially in areas with astrong ethnic Albanian population.
